Like Ski Beech, Sugar Mountain was born
from the vision of Alabama dentist, Dr. Thomas
Brigham. Dr. B, as the Avery County locals
called him, decided Sugar Mountain was the ideal
location for his second southern skiing
endeavor. Born in Atlanta and raised in Vermont,
Dr. Brigham brought his love for skiing to the
south, initiating the development of Ski Beech,
Sugar Mountain and Snowshoe in West Virginia.
Now known as the “Father of Southern Skiing,”
Dr. Brigham counts the economic stimulus his
efforts provided to the region as his greatest
accomplishment. “The region had chronic
unemployment, as most of Appalachia did in those
days, and it gave me great pleasure to provide
employment for so many people. The bottom line,
in my thinking, is that the skiing industry
opened the door for year-round recreation and
living in the area, and that – plus the economic
progress – allows me to sleep comfortably at
night.”
Sugar Mountain opened in 1969 and continues to
set the bar for Skiing in North Carolina. Ski
